MIXED MEDIA CANVAS - THE ART SOCIETY

My first take on our July 2014 projects from Christy Tomlinson's "The Art Society"  I created this with my 8 year old grandson in mind, McLean lives on a small island north of us.  He and his siblings have lived at the beach since school was out and he loves music, I think he will enjoy this.   I wrote the lyrics of  "When You Wish Upon A Star" all around the outside of the canvas to create a border.  I know he and his mumma will sit and turn the canvas as they sing.

I have used a 6x6" canvas, a lot of different sprays, stencils, mostly Pitt pens for shading, a variety of sparkly products and a white pen for highlights.  I used "Goose Bumps" from Tsukineko  (a clear texture spray) as the final finish.  I am going to be working with the same elements to create a more sophisticated version.

MIXED MEDIA CANVAS

In February I signed up for Christy Tomlinson's monthly mixed media video club "The Art Society".  (Blog button on left)  I so loved the February project that I purchased January also, which was when this club started.  Now I can hardly wait for the project to come each month!

This project was done on an 8x8 inch canvas.  I am pleased with the texture I managed to create in the background, you don't realize how tricky that can be until you make your own attempts.

JULY THE 4TH MIXED MEDIA CANVAS

It's been all about the 4th of July this past week!  Though I have lived in Canada since 1972, I get all nostalgic for the 4th of July.  Not to say we don't do a great July 1st but it isn't the same.  Americana seems to be "current" once again, great excuse for me to send some pieces off to my friends.

This one was done on an 8x6 inch canvas using a piece of paper napkin for the blue/stars, vintage music sheet for the white "stripes" and red patterned paper scraps for the red "stripes".   A sparkly white chipboard heart in the lower right, ringed with a bit of red Stickles is adhered in the bottom right corner.  Finishing touches include red and silver Stickles, faux stitching with a white pen and a bit of stamped text which I smudged.  I used a sepia toned decoupage finish to give it the vintage "Americana" look.

I have used fabric scraps on this one with three different patterned fabric to create the "flag" and a bit of silver ric rac to set off the blue field of stars.  I used a clear decoupage finish, red and silver Stickles, the white pen for faux stitches and another sparkly chipboard heart.  This one is going to a quilter so fabric works well.

This month's project is all about creating a base image with scraps from magazine pages and then using washi tapes, medium or heavy body acrylic paints mostly to define your creation.  (click here to check out "The Art Society") .

I joined this group to learn new skills, discover what I could do to hone what skills I might have and generally stretch.  This one was a stretch for me.  Of course no practise project first!  And I could have chosen a single bloom as my start but no I decided on a bouquet :)  My daughter has already claimed this one so I will likely give it another go.

This was my inspiration picture.

The March techniques were all about "saving" canvases that didn't make the grade.  I adore both of these  8x8 canvases now, the first is hanging in my dining room and the second is going to a DIL who fell in love with it.

MIXED MEDIA CANVASES

I have been having an "arty blast" creating canvases using the monthly videos from Christy Tomlinsons' "The Art Society".   Check it out.

Almost all of the supplies I have used were already in my stash.  Learning new techniques to use what I already have on hand is great, makes any new art supply purchases quilt free.  hmm  That does sound convincing LOL

Here I painted over a 6x6" canvas that I had never been happy with. (Reuse is good!)  The writing is a stencil from The Crafters' Workshop which I stencilled on using white pen.  Love the "chalkboard" look.  I used Graphic 45's "French Country" for the feathers and rolled flowers.

This one is a 6x12" canvas with the background created using napkins.  I topped that with several layers from a vintage lacy dinner napkin.  I covered this with a sepia toned finish.  The center is a metal piece from my stash mounted on vintage French text.  I used a Martha Stewart mold and Model Magic to make the bird and Distress Inks to colour her.  I think a day creating with different molds and building a stash of these would be fun.

Another 6x6" canvas, this time covered with fabrics.  Vintage ric rac, a sweet doily topped with a molded and stamped heart, the metal bird is from Tim Holtz.  Vintage, homey goodness.  Do you hunt the thrift shops for supplies?  I often find packages of ric rac and seam binding for a few cents.

CHRISTMAS IN THE BANK (03/2014)

The inspiration for this little bit came from the monthly video club I now am subscribed to "The Art Society" created by Christi Tomlinson.

In my stash I have a set of Cavallini Christmas Washi tapes and a number of 4x4 inch shallow canvases, which I used to create a half dozen of these.  I covered the canvas with the tapes, no adhesive.  Shaded between each line a bit.  Covered them (I actually did 6 of these) with Mod Podge and then glittered them up with Stickles.  The "evergreen", tiny red balls and ribbon went on last.  I think these are the perfect bits to add a a little holiday decor on a shelf or bookcase, as filler in a bowl or gift basket.

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (MIXED MEDIA CANVAS)

I am still focused on creating mixed media canvases... Gloria Stengl's newest challenge influenced this one.   Have you checked out the new Craft Hoarders Anonymous  Challenge?  #2  is a Color Challenge with a twist. Pick the thing or things that you seem to hoard the most, and using the color scheme shown (blues), create a project that showcases your hoarded item or items.

I admit it, yes just sayin' it right out loud...I hoard all art supplies!

The first layer is a patchwork of various blue patterned paper napkins (paper napkins, my latest item to hoard LOL) which I Mod Podged onto the canvas and then shaded each "square".  I used the shiny Mod Podge...I just love the shiny smooth feel of it.  On that I overlaid a checker board of white lacy handmade paper for a bit more depth and texture.  You can't see that additional texture in the photo but IRL it gives a bit more life to the whole.  I have quite a stack of vintage music sheets in my hoard so let's add some of that. I try not to hoard punches but I do have a large basket and a drawer full of them, the butterflies and small blue flowers are punched from bits in my scrap box..another hoard of goodies.

THE ART SOCIETY (FEBRUARY/14 PROJECT)

Christy Tomlinson has started a new monthly Mixed Media Video club and is calling it "The Art Society".  Once a month you  are sent an email with a link the months' videos, projects, pdfs etc.  You also have the option of joining an online group where you can share your projects and get to know the other subscribers. 

My subscription started with February..oh I am having so much fun!  I have a number of canvasses underway.  I didn't start out intending these to be a set..but that's what came out :)  I have used a 6x6 canvas, various red tissues and finished these with a sepia toned Mod Podge.  I am showing you these on the chintz duvet of the red bedroom..maybe they will go there on the red walls?  Or maybe a gift for a friend who is in love with red.
